SPOKANE - Former state representative Todd Mielke is dropping his bid for Congress and will instead run for a seat on the Spokane County Commission.

Mielke, a Republican, will challenge incumbent Commissioner John Roskelley.

He said his talks with voters indicated local issues were at the forefront of peoples' minds.

Mielke represented the Spokane area in the Legislature before leaving the body in 1995.

Mielke was one of four Republicans battling for the nomination to replace Congressman George Nethercutt, who is vacating the seat to run for the Senate.

The others are state Senator Larry Sheahan, state Representative Cathy McMorris and Spokane attorney Shaun Cross. Businessman Don Barbieri is the Democratic challenger.
